Made Up Songs
Last night Olive was exhausted after a big weekend -- a bar-b-que at Andrew's, a garage sale and then dinner guests on Saturday, a day at the park and a late-afternoon and evening visit to Grandma and Grandpa's. She was amped and angry when we left Grandma and Grandpa's, we braced ourselves for a long ride home. She was pretty good for the most part. We listed to the "la la song" 312 times, with her saying "la la song again" at the final beat of the song each time. Rewind, replay. Rewind, replay.
Traffic started to get bad, ramps were closed due to the fireworks at the Berkeley marina, and she stared to get restless less than a mile from home. It took some fancy driving to get off the freeway, and during this delay she started to get more and more angry. So we started to list songs that we could sing.
"Should we sing 'Wheels on the bus'?"
"No."
"Should we sing 'Wheels on the bus'?"
"No."
"Should we sing the 'ABC's'?"
"No."
"Should we sing the 'Thomas Song'?"
"No."
"Should we sing the 'Miffy song'?"
"No."
We listed just about every song we could think of. It was good enough for her to say "no" instead of screaming. Then we ran out of songs. So we did what any normal parent would do. We made song titles up.
"Should we sing 'The Dog has stinky breath'?"
She surprised us.
"Yes."
So we did what any normal parent would do. We made the lyrics up.
This saved us from the ear piercing screams. We got home, went inside and prepared for bed. Crisis averted.
