Overheard

Liv goes to preschool with kids that range from three to five. Some have older brothers and sisters, and as I should have expected, have brought some of the older kid sensibilities and interests to the preschool crowd. This has ranged from Liv coming home and saying "I'm going to kill you!" with a smile on her face to a wide variety of misused and misplaced references to penis' and poop. That's all to be expected, I guess. The funny stuff to me is when she comes home and says something like "Dad, have you seen the really scary movie?" "Which one?" "It's called Scooby Doo! It's really scary!" We've never seen or even talked about Scooby Doo, so I was intrigued and said, "I don't know much about Scooby Doo." "Well, it's really scary! And I know all about it." "What's it about?" "Well, it has a cat, and a cow and a horse...." She clearly has no idea. I can totally envision how this came about. Liv is playing with a friend and two of the boys -- for some reason I always picture the "bad" influences as boys -- are boisterously talking or re-enacting scenes from Scooby Doo. Liv stops, in mid-play, and listens -- probably with her mouth open -- and absorbs. She brings this new-found info home, and discusses it because she thinks that's what older kids do.
